President’s Message:

Dear Mid-Missouri Trout Unlimited Members,

This month will be the annual holiday party and the annual photo contest. Spouses and significant others are invited. Please bring a dish to share. Soft drinks will be provided.  Folks may also bring beverages.

There will be an entrance fee for the photo contest.  Please bring five dollars cash per photo entered to the event.  We will give the money collected to the contest winner.  You may send your photo’s to my email (prefered) or bring a USB Flash Drive (a.k.a. thumb drive).  Please do a virus scan on the drive before you come to the event.

Please save the dates for the 2025 Fly Fishing Film Festival and the 2025 Annual Conservation Banquet. The Film Festival will be January 18, 2025, 10 AM at the Ragtag Cinema, 10 Hitt Street, Columbia, MO.  The 2025 Conservation Banquet will be February 28, 2025 starting at 5:30 PM at the Stoney Creek Inn, 2601 S Providence Rd, Columbia, MO.  Tickets will go on sale December 5 on our website.  Tickets for the both events will also be available at the events.  Tickets for the film festival may be sold out so we recommend you get them online.  Tickets acquired at the banquet will be at a higher cost.

Hope to see you at the holiday party and photo contest.

November Meeting:

We do not have the official minutes, but we approved allocating funds to publicize the film festival and the banquet. We also authorized funding to help publish Bill’s children’s book on the an Iowa Driftless brook trout.  After we discussed business, Curt showed pictures from the Iowa trip. We discussed where to fish next spring, possibly the Minnesota Driftless.

John and Ken Foster are at the mouth of Coldwater Spring during our Iowa Driftless trip.

Editor’s notes

I contacted the Trout Youth Education Team and they would like to see a full copy of Bill’s book. I sent screen the shots Travis forwarded.

I emailed the Twin Cities TU Chapter about climate change coordinators and mentioned Driftless fishing. He invited us to come and fish the MN Driftless. I plan to attend the TU national meeting in St Paul September  24-28 and stay a longer to fish. Doug and I attended the regional meeting in Taos last May. It was enjoyable and an opportunity to see all the great things TU is doing. If we are voting on where to fish in the spring, I recommend MN and will connect us with the locals.

Conservation Notes from TU:

After massive damage from the hurricanes TU looks at “Floods And Building Reconnected Rivers”

We all enjoy catching a lot of fish and landing big ones, but are there times we want to hold back and take care of the fish. Sometimes the water is too warm or on the borderline for trout. How much stress does catching and playing put on wild fish. Along these lines, TU published Fishing our Conscience

Conservation Notes from the Missouri Streams:

This one hits close to home:  Key Colorado River Basins at Tipping Point: Study

Six key watersheds along the Colorado River have become increasingly vulnerable to drought and could be nearing a point of no return https://thehill.com/policy/equilibrium-sustainability/4990948-colorado-river-watersheds-vulnerability/

How can YOU reduce your personal use of plastic?

  1. Clean with baking soda and vinegar or homemade cleaners instead of cleaners packaged in plastic.

  2. Buy powdered laundry detergent in boxes rather than liquid detergents in plastic containers, or make your own detergent.

  3. Skip the plastic containers, and package food leftovers in glass, metal, or ceramic dishes.

  4. Bring your own containers to restaurants to package leftovers.

  5. Swap disposable paper napkins with reusable cloth napkins. They feel nice and reduce overall waste, which reduces the use of plastic bags!
